I got given mine, its an old "Pro series" Hoya Star-6 filter.
I can't seem to find any on any camera shops websites but trademe has heaps of cheap brand ones so I would imagine Ebay would too? :)

Found one-but it ships from Hong Kong and doesn't say if it fits a Canon, Nikon or whatever.

For your 18-55mm you want a 58mm one :)
The sizes are the thread size that's on the end of your lens, its not brand specific :)
Edit: Before your trip you might want to look at circular polarizing filters too :)
And I would highly recommend having just a plain UV filter on the end of the Siggy 150-500 if you get it, just to protect the front lens!

Shiloh, those are amazing! I can totally see you going pro and making money at this. I don't know how to get started but maybe your area has a weekend market or something? You might get noticed by the right people, really getting a break in this kind of career is all about having the talent AND the right connections. You sure do have talent!

Thanks :)
I keep getting told I should ask one of the pro's in town if they would take me on as either an intern or apprentice, I really should one day!
The editor and head photographer of the local paper have both said they would be happy to print my work, I just have to be in the right place at the right time to get "news worthy" shots lol, if I had a better camera I could have had one of my fire shots from the arson the other night printed but my cam is useless for high ISO work!
I have talked to the owners of the 2 souvenir shops and the art sales woman at the museum here and there all very keen to stock and sell my images, its just money holding me back right now as I can't afford to get some large prints framed up or do a run of post cards at the moment :o
(For post cards I would have to get a run of at least 400 printed to make them viable -the more you print the cheaper it is- and I can't see 400 of them selling lol)

Wow, Shiloh, that first shot is AMAZING! A pic like that is one I'd want to frame and hang. You really should get into professional photography. You're so talented!!!

Doesn't Flickr have some way of selling photos? Or can you do a digital display and let people place orders somehow so you don't have to front up the money for prints? If you are getting cruise ships in town, they would be a good source of customers too.

The only way to sell through Flickr is by submitting pics to Getty's, and then if your pics are up to there standards they only sell them for $5 each and give you 30% of the profit.
I am slowly learning HTML coding to make my own site too :)
Long way to go yet though! http://homepages.ihug.co.nz/~shiloh/Raizer%20Images.html
I figure I will get the site sorted before paying for a domain name
If you guys ever want to buy a print PM me lol

Shiloh, it's actually pretty cheap to get a domain and if you use Go Daddy, you also get a 5 page website for free! All of my FAF Group sites are of this type.
www.conuremania.com
www.cockatielmania.com
www.quakermania.com
If you go to https://www.godaddy.com/domains/search.aspx?isc=gda121d you can get www.raizerimages.com. It's about $15 a year NZD.
They have a pretty easy to use website creator called Website Tonight and you should be able to knock up a 5 pager in a couple hours. There is a nice selection of templates. If you get the free site with domain, there is a small ad for GoDaddy at the top. If you pay for a larger site, the ad will disappear such as www.featheredandfree.com.
You need to resize the images for web or they will max out the free bandwidth.
You also get email--shiloh@raizerimages.com

I think I am going to stick with the host I have (there my ISP aswell lol) as I have more than enough (free) storage with unlimited traffic, and they do a good price on a .co.nz addy if you buy it through them :)
And I am kinda enjoying learning HTML coding! lol
Although I think I may get a friend of mine to help out a little with it.
For now though I have started a blog (yes even I'm shocked that I have a blog!!)

there are also a couple of good and not overly expensive photography schools around the place to get those actual qualifications but if not then i agree 100% about approaching a photographer whose work you like and seeing if you can apprentice with them.
A friend of mine did this some time ago and enjoyed every moment, made a great friendship and eventually built a fabulous photography based business.

A blog can be a good idea too, I think you can link it on your Facebook page for more exposure. The only blog I ever had was about my 2007 RTW trip.
The blog might also help you hook up with other photography enthusiasts.

Yeah I have looked into courses but there is nothing local and there doesn't seem to be any that offer extramural courses.
And with Sandy, Aaron, the birds and cats there is no way we can pack up and move so I can go study at massy or anything.
So I am wanting to learn what I can from any pro's that will help me, while still trying to develop my own style if that makes sense :)

I've seen mini-photography lessons on technique on Youtube so that's a free option. You don't get feedback on your own efforts like you would from a teacher. I have been trying to convince the president of the Parrot Society to have a bird photography workshop at Parrots 2010 but I don't think he is going to do it.
