Just got an update on my lil bubba. She is 6 weeks old today. He sent me a photo of her cause I couldn't get up to see her this week.

Here's a picture of her mama, she's 5 years old and is so brightly coloured. They have never *touch wood* had any plucking/toe tapping problems with either parents.

Isn't she gorgeous!

Here's one of her dad. I think he is 5 as well (possibly younger can't remember though they did tell me)

No longer completely bald ontop, her redhead is starting to grow right in now I can't wait to see her next week, she has grown so much in the few days since I saw her. I can't beleive how much I love her already, even though she was an 'accident' so to speak. I am trying so hard to be a great parront when she comes home, I am all set to make some beans/rice tommorrow, as well as some roasted chick peas (I am going to try them out on the ringies and teils I am sure they won't mind! ). I have been busy printing recipes and putting them in my eckie file so I can easily find them when I need them. I am scared but still can't wait til she is all growned up and ready to come home with me :yahoo: I have even started whispering her name, just softly so the jinx can't hear. Give me another week and I will let you all know :excited:

ma and pa sure do look wonderful. That baby? Oh my. Ding dang cute!!!
Good you asked about the parents plucking. The place I got Sophie as well as our AV believe there is a lot more to that then gets talked about.

Great that you can meet the parents. I know a lot of folks really believe in adoption as do I, but when you have the choice to know the parent birds, talk with the breeder and see mom and dad in action, I think your chances are much, much better that you will have a healthy, happy young 'un. I also agree with Jim that there maybe a genetic link between behaviors and the eventual disposition of the baby. That makes knowing the parents particularly important with species like eclectus, cockatoos and greys.

So happy for you - what an experience - watching your baby grow! :yahoo:

Breeding parrots should be done correctly - not just making any old bird a breeder. I'm sure in the wild all the problem birds live shorter lives - culled by nature. But when it's a pet - you want to help them thru it & maybe you can - but hopefully not as a breeder.

I've read that temperament & physical traits are hereditary. My Dad was a leading Geneticist in his day - he uses what he knows in his farming. The apple doesn't fall that far from the tree, genetically.

I too am for re-homes but if there weren't any [what a dream] then I'd really want a pet from a known & proven pair.

Many of the cage birds we have in the States you folks in OZ are lucky enough to see in your backyard and at your bird feeders. I think we would have fewer birds in need of homes if we lucky enough to have them in our backyards.

But then, I always remember a few years ago when someone from OZ posted a picture of their back porch that the SC2's destroyed and they had to rebuild. They also stopped feeding them because that was the second time they had to rebuild the porch.
