View Full Version : Bud's vet visit

Yesterday we had to take Bud to the vet cause he was just not acting right. Normally, he's very vocal, active, playing, things like that. Well, yesterday Randy noticed that Bud wasn't doing much at all, wasn't vocal at all, not moving much, not pooping much (& he's a poopin' machine!), even snuggled with him which Bud doesn't normally do. So when I got home, I could tell right away that something wasn't right. Normally he greets me very enthusiastically, & yesterday he just sat there. I noticed that his belly looked a little distended & was waddling more than normal. So I called the vet's office & they took a msg to have him call me. So while we were waiting, I looked at him to make sure that his vent wasn't blocked for some reason. When I did that, I noticed he whined & was panting & straining to get something out. That's when it hit me that Bud might be a Buddette. Anyway, to make a long story short, we got to the vet's office & sure enough, Bud is Buddette. There was an egg stuck in there & it wasn't coming out. He tried to manipulate it out & that wasn't working. He tried using a couple q-tip looking things to help & that didn't work. She kept prolapsing & straining too much for him to be able to help. So he said that since the egg was too far up, the only option was surgery. We okay'd that & he put her under. Once she was under, she was relaxed enough that he was able to break the egg & get the contents out of her but the shell is still there. He couldn't grab the shell since it had collapsed in on itself so we're waiting to see if it passes here in the next day or two. So she's at the vet's office right now, hopefully she's doing ok. The vet called us last nite before he left to let us know that she was coming out of the anesthesia ok, she had pooped a little but not a whole lot. That was to be expected due to inflammation of everything. He's supposed to call us today to let us know how she's doing today so I'm on pins & needles right now waiting to hear & I didn't sleep a wink I'm so worried. I want my baby home!!!!

Thanks Tiffany! Yes I do miss her very much! Just got an update from vet, she's fully awake now & seems to be doing ok so far. She hasn't passed the shell as of yet but hopefully will soon. She hasn't eaten anything that he can tell & if she hasn't eaten the next time he checks on her, then he'll tube feed her a little so she at least gets something in her & get some calories going. She hasn't been away from us for more than 2 days & that was several years ago. And at that time, she didn't eat or anything. She was just real depressed. Hopefully she won't get that way again!

It's very weird now! I still catch myself calling her "him" or "he"! Randy & I were talking about that last nite, she's our little tomboy now!

Oh we were both scared out of our minds while waiting at the vet's office! We didn't know what was gonna happen cause any surgery is risky. We're still a little scared for her cause as of right now, she still hasn't passed the shell yet but she seems to be doing better. Even the vet said that she's more alert now than when we brought her in there last nite. I'm kinda glad we didn't bring her home last nite cause we got stuck on the hiway for about a 1/2 hour due to a 2 car accident. The vet seems to think that with all the fluids they gave her while under the anesthetic that it should come out on it's own. He's supposed to call us later this evening with another update (I'm CST), he'll call earlier if something goes wrong (cross your fingers that it doesn't!!). Last nite I sat on the couch & was lost cause I always snuggle with Bud before bedtime. I didn't get my snuggle time!!! :bawl:

Hope all goes well for you and Buddette. Egg binding is a scary thing and it it's great that you were able to tell something was wrong and get her to the Vet. I have always had a fear of egg binding and the reason all my parrots are males.

I hope she can come home too! The vet was supposed to call us last nite & update us but he didn't so I'm calling first thing when they open to find out what's going on. No news is good news I guess but I'd still like to know!
