Finally a place where I can really talk about the rescue and the birds. I love my fids to death but my life right now kind of rotates around the rescue. I do all the feeding, watering and caretaking seven days a week for hours a day. I do have a volunteer who comes about every other day to clean cages. and she keeps the cages immaculate so that helps a lot!

So let me tell you about some of our residents:

Fred, Ethel, Lucy and Ricky: My biggest struggle right now. Four wild quakers who have lived for years as display birds at the Pelicanman wild bird sancutuary. Pelican Man closed it's doors and no one would take these wild quakers. They came to us with wet vents and I was suspicous. The next day I found all four had the runs bad and we still don't know why. We have done blood tests, fecal samples, checked for giardia and psittacosis. Nothing.
The vet thinks maybe worms so they are on a deworming med and also Baytril to fight any bacterial problems but they just keep on pooping! I am on the second week of wiping butts and giving meds twice a day. It is frustrating and I am praying the runs end soon!

Sammy and Bandit: You have met Sammy and Bandit on Birdboard. Sammy is a quaker and Bandit is a wild nanday. They adore each other and I am hoping to adopt them out together.

Lite and Brite.: Lite and Brite are female budgies. They were young ones ( under six months) when they were found abandoned in an apartment. Left for three days with the AC set as low as it could go and no food and water. They were sick for thirty days and when I thought it was hopeless they pulled through. They will be in a new home in a week. It was hard to find a home for them because I wanted someone who would value these two adorable babies like they were big birds.

Angel: Angel is the sweetest nicest tiel I have ever met. She is a beautiful pearly pied and was found outside when she flew into someone's sliding glass doors. I have never been super fond of tiels. I am more of a quaker and conure person but this little girl has stolen my heart. She never passes up the chance to explore either. Angel is everywhere and exploring every nook and cranny. She peeks in every crack she finds LOL

Sylvie and Eric: Sylvie and Eric are a tiel couple pulled from a very neglectful situation. Sylvie started looking bad, her poops were polyuric. I had the vet do a chem panel. Sadly enough Sylvie is dying of kidney failure. Her and Eric will stay with us until she passes and then we will find a home for Eric.

Rudy: Rudy is a cinnamon male tiel. He is sweet but does not like me! One of the few birds who wants nothing to do with me but is nice to everyone else. Go figure. Rudy landed on a lady's shoulder outside.

Of course last but not least Maxi. Maxi is doing wonderful and has a full beautiful tail now!

OK that is it. We don't take in huge amounts of birds. Only what we can handle plus we are having a slow month for a change. All our big birds were adopted out before Xmas and we won't take anymore in until we get back from Houston. Thanks for reading about my crew!

Thanks for the update Lynda! Are you going to be adopting out Angel soon? I wonder if her and Princess would get along? I have been thinking of getting another Tiel (Princess has stolen my heart as well- I never thought I would be a Tiel person). Prinny has really wanted to get close to Doyle and Danny and neither are interested.

Lynda, I love hearing about your birds especially Sammy and Bandit. I would love to add a Nanday after my trip in July and hope that he/she would become friends with Chaska.

BTW, Lynda can you make a seperate post and catch us up to date on the voting for Maxi cage contest? I lost all track wih all the drama that has been happening. We still have until the end of the month.

Ya know I love hearing about rescues and the happy stories that can come with them.

Nothing is better than giving a fid a second or third or fourth chance

Takes a truly gifted and beautiful person!

I think you would love a nanday Tiki. My nandays and quakers both at home and in the rescue get along wonderfully. Just get a younger nanday I think they will do fine.

I don't think it is worth a post with Maxi. That contest is so rigged and now they are making everyone register to vote. Max has 2181 to the lovebirds 3255. If the lovebirds are cheating and get caught Max wins hands down. If they aren't cheating Max loses. There is no way we can get 1000 votes in just 20 days. Not with everyone having to register. We will find out soon enough.

I think I have a person for Angel. She is coming over soon to meet her. Angel is really special and once this lady meets her she will fall madly in love. The lady works at home and Angel will have a shoulder to sit on all day long. There have to be some Georgia rescues around with sweet little tiels. Tiels and budgies are the most common rescue bird, with quakers, nandays and cockatoos hot on their tails. Just make sure you get a psittacosis test done if you adopt one. Tiels are common carriers.

Thank you, I have a huge flock of my own but the rescue is about all I talk about anymore. LOL Nothing is better then a second chance and a good second chance at that.

Thanks Lisa,
I don't have much good to say about the birdclub today other then they have generous wallets. It was the first meeting I am president and no one would volunteer for anything. Not even hospitality. So next meeting anyone who wants food or drink will be paying me for it and profits go to the rescue. Jokes on them when they see my prices!

I had no idea you operated a rescue Lynda. I admire you and the others who run good rescues, it's not an easy job.

Really I can't take all the credit for the rescue. I used to rescue privately and place the birds where I could. Another bird club member was doing that same thing. But the birds we could not place we both ended up keeping. When she got to eighteen cockatiels ( she only took tiels) and I got to fourteen parrots we decided we had to do something.

We went to our birdclub and told them we wanted to open the rescue and use the birdclub name. The member had another building on property that she hurricane proofed and we turned into a rescue room.
So we are both cofounders and coordinators and the rescue is run as part of our club. That way the club gives us a yearly allotment and the club board is also the rescue board. We also have the benefits of being incorparated already and just have to change our tax status from a 501c4 to a c3. We are struggling with that right now. We can't afford a lawyer and have to rewrite the bylaws ourselves and use an internet company. We could not find a probono lawyer to help us.
