This is Oscar the Orange Winged Amazon. I promised pictures so here he is. He is doing pretty good. Yesterday he took treats from my fingers. Today I was allowed to pet his head. He even did a one foot partial step up just to show me he understands but does not want to. He snaps a lot when you are not following his rules ( no touching toys, only touch Oscar when Oscar offers it) But he does not try for your fingers, he just warns. I don't pull away and the most he did to me was brush my hand. But then again this is just the honeymoon.

Lynda I wish you would quit tempting me with all the beautiful fids at the rescue. Guess it's a good thing I'm in Ohio for now. ;)

Wow - despite his situation - he's a beautiful Bird.
How do you manage to be able to handle so many different birds?
If i was next door I'd be right over to check him out. Are you going to keep him until he's in better condition & better trained or will you be looking for a forever home for him at the same time you're working with him?
Looking forward to more photos.

He is a sweet one. I am alreeady falling in love. I never met a wild caught before. His band is off because it became caught on a toy years ago but the lady who owned him knows for a fact he was imported into Miami in 1979.

Do you mean how do I have the time to handle so many? LOL I keep them all clipped for one and I split my time in the rescue between small and large bird out time. Birds like Maxi, Sammy and Bandit who stay where they are put are out the whole time I am there. Plus I have volunteers who come in and socalize the birds they can safely handle. The first lesson every bird learns is perch training so volunteers can safely transport the more aggresive birds.
For adopting it counts on the person. If the perfect person walked through the door and demonstrated proper training techniques and an ability to handle the bird I would let him go. Otherwise he stays with us until I teach some manners. Even then Oscar will pick his right person. We will know it because both the bird and person will be comfortable with each other.

LOL wait until you come to the rescue and see Sammy and Bandit preening each other, Maxi begging for scritches, sweet Angel tiel rubbing her soft face against yours and Rudy tiel shoving his face into your hand. You will have a birdie breakdown! I want them all also! It is so hard to see them go.

how do you teach a bird who is afraid of wooden perches to even go near one? i have a foster who was chased around with a broom at his previous owner's home. and he is just so fearful of wooden perches. i have a wooden perch that i place closer and closer to his cage. on the ground, my foster amazon will go exploring around it, sometimes even walking over it, but once in my hand, its something to be feared. is just going closer and closer with it to him each day and taking it slowly the best way?
i need to teach him this since i seem to be the only one he likes. men he hates very much.

He's beautiful! I guess I am lucky I don't live closer, I would be in big trouble! Actually, I would want Sammy, Bandit, Angel and Maxi too! :faint:

The first thing is you have to desensitive him to the perch. Keep it in or on his cage. Don't touch his feet at first. Let him see you play with the perch. Touch your face with it, scratch your head with it. Then after a while of watching you touch your self with the perch then gently touch the bird's back with the perch, then his head, then touch your head with it again.
After he relaxes around the perch start step up training. It takes a while but he will get used to the perch the more he sees it.
In the rescue our one plus is every bird is watching every other bird get lovings and step up onto the perch. If you have another bird in the house who will step up onto the perch make a huge deal out of it in front of the bird who won't step up. Eventually they catch on. I tame the feral birds the same way. I sit near their cages and love on other birds. They really watch and learn from the other birds.

thanks, Lynda! i will definitely try your techniques. I do have another amazon that steps up very nicely on a wooden perch who would be a great "mentor", but it will have to wait till after the quarantine isolation is over. (just a few weeks to go!)
