STEP BY STEP - CREATING MY NEW BIRD ROOM
First the birds had to be moved into temporary accommodation. The tiels moved in with Chula.

BEFORE
There were some design flaws in the original bird room that I hadn't thought of when I first designed it. The triangular corner was too high and it's hard to catch the birds when they go up there. They managed to chew a hole in the top corner big enough to squeeze through.

They had chewed through other parts of the rear wall too.

The angle of the walls attracted bird poop and the painted timber was hard to clean. Having the playgym and food table standing on the floor made it difficult to change the newspapers.

STAGE 1 - INSTALLING THE TIMBER FRAME
The studs are made with pine and held together with metal L brackets. The horizontal studs are in a position to later attach playgyms and food tables.

STAGE 2 - PLYWOOD WALLS
Notice how the walls are slightly slanted inwards at the top to discourage poop from sticking to the wals.

STAGE 3 - PAINTING THE WALLS
The old aqua colour was fine for showing off cockatiels but it didn't really do anything for Chaska and the conures. I chose a light mossy green to look more natural and compliment the birds. I used an eco-friendly paint http://britishpaints.com.au/index.asp?page=23 and of course we had to paint the whole foyer, not just the bird room.

STAGE 4 - INSTALLING PERSPEX WALL COVERS
Perspex (I think it's called Plexiglass in the States) comes on these huge rolls and is pretty flexible. It wipes clean easily and the birds won't be able to chew through it so these walls will last and the birds can't escape. It was screwed into the studs and alond the top and bottom.

STAGE 5 - TOYS, PERCHES AND PLAYGYM
We attached the food tray and seed hoppers to the rear wall-no more table legs on the floor. I made a bamboo playgym (thanks for the idea, Jim) and hung it from the ceiling. The cargo net is attached to one of the ceiling beams. 4 Happy Huts are also attached to the ceiling beams.

Ina and I worked about 12 hours on Saturday and about 8 hours on Sunday. I was desperate to finish it before Monday as I am not storng enough to use a saw (normal not electric) and I can't carry the timber up the stairs alone. And I didn't want the fids stuck in crappy little cages for another week.
They are loving it! Ixchel and Yaxche clinbed right back into their happy hut last niight, I had to show Chula where hers was, and she crashed out. Miss Chaska did not appreicate having a brand new one and slept on a branch last night. I had to put her old grey plush one back in, hope she sleeps well tonight.

What a great job you did with renovations. I love that new color.
BTW, a fantastic idea with creating this forum. I have a lot of reading to do.

Great job Tara. (Contractor Grade A+) I am at the same point now where I thought I planned the TOOs aviary pretty well and covered all the bases.
Now that they have lived in it for quite a while some glaring flaws have shown them self. It's going to be time for a complete renovation soon here too. :)
