View Full Version : Recommend a digital camera???

I am looking for a new digital camera. I want the option of looking through a viewfinder or looking on the screen to take the photo; I want good pictures naturally; I want a movie option; easy to operate. I bought this one not that long ago and I don't know if it's just too hard to figure out but I can't just point and shoot and end up with a good photograph. It takes "too long" from when you press the button to take the photo till when it actually takes the photo - you miss the shot basically.

Oh and an external memory card is nice too.

So tell me about your camera...please???

I have a Canon Elph -- had the film version (still have it) and upgraded to the digital. It is simple and straightforward and takes great pictures!

I know what you mean about cameras that "take too long". Mine does that too and when I get a new camera, that is one of the features I will be looking at. Other than that, I love my Kodak DC7590, takes great pics and is easy to use. I need the biggest possible optical zoom for taking pics of birds.

I know Peter and Angelo will have better advice here.

Well I'm wanting some advice too. I'm up for a new camera very soon and need one that will take quality close ups as well as the zoom where I can get some decent flight shots. Guys please help us. I'm looking at spending around the $1000 mark if needs be.

I have a Canon S3IS its 6.0mp and takes really good pictures. It's a point and shoot that gives you options. There is a S5IS as well that is 8 mp. Oh, I like the 12X zoom. Olympus has one similar (Jackie has one) that has 18X zoom.

I want to be shopping for a Canon EOS Rebel XSi. http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=16303

These Rebels keep getting better and better imo.

While I'm not shopping for a digital camera, I'd sure use one if your old one needs a new home!!

Sally, if you want something small, easy to use but good, I can't say enough about the Canon SD1000 or the SD750. Canon upgrade both models so I can't say if they are better but the pricing can't be beat on the 1000/750 right now.

the camera i use is a Nikon D80 (SLR ) , peter now uses a Nikon D40 ( i think ) and angelo is king...! he has the super duper ( almost orgasmic ) Nikon D300.

 :heartbeat: OMG... the D300 :heartbeat:

Moving on, then!

I have a 1940's-style digicam  It's a wee Pentax OptioS40. Something like 4 megapixels w/ a 3x optical zoom. I've been slow to get into digital b/c I love lugging around my Minolta film SLR, which was my HS graduation present. The S40 takes fairly decent photos as far as landscapes and posed shots go. For spur-of-the-moment action? Not so good :pullhair: It also has a miniscule screen, like most digicams did 5 years ago, or thereabouts. NONE of my friends can take a photo on it worth a damn b/c they can't compose w/o a 3x5 screen but that's an argument for another thread altogether :hiddendevil:

Eventually, I will break down and buy myself a dSLR. I'm torn b/t Nikon and Canon. My first camera was a Canon (a Snappy, back in the 80s) but I really like the feel of the Nikon D80. We shall see...

you have to switch to digital sometime... Kodak is not making any more films for cameras.....any time soon, they announce it a few months ago...

To my knowledge, Kodak has not made an announcement about no longer making film. They stopped making APS film a few years ago and stop making B&W paper... Although I have no doubt that the end is near. Polaroid stopped making its film earlier this year.

Fear not, however: there are more film makers out there ;) There's a growing force of old-school photogs out there -- it's not going to go w/o a fight.

I'm looking at the prices here. I don't think I am good enough for an SLR, I would need something blonde-proof.

I was thinking of going with the D80. Apparently there's a camera place down (I think Hutt Street) that the airforce photo boys use. They're meant to be quite good with prices, service and advice.
Just having a look at the D300 and OMG. Looks fantastic but I would be terrified with my lack of photography knowledge to use it properly. It's also out of my price range by quite a bit. As it is I may need to get you over here Matty to help me out.

You might get a deal with end of financial year sales. My tax refund is already allocated to the USA tickets so that leaves me out. Maybe next year.

I own 3 cameras. Two of them are point and shoot cameras and one is a DSLR...The P&S cameras are both Canons...an S3 IS and an S5 IS. If you want a reasonably priced P&S with great video capability, I would suggest the Canon S5 IS. It's 8mp with a 12x Optical zoom and it takes really good video with excellent stereo sound. It has many features and options on it and I would equate it as being the DSLR of point and shoot cameras. One of the really nice things about it is the 2.5 inch screen that is also on a swivel...makes lining up a shot without the view finder a piece of cake...
My DSLR is as Matty mentioned earlier in this thread, a Nikon D40...I've only had it a short time and even though I really don't know what I'm doing half the time, I just love it. I actually love it so much, that my S5 IS has pretty much been retired...I think I may only use it for taking video...If anyone is looking for a nicely priced DSLR, I would not hesitate to get a D40...and spend the extra money on a couple of good lenses for it...you won't regret it. I have the basic 18-55mm lense that in general comes with it and the 55-200mm VR lense that I use exclusively...the next lense I will get for it will be the 70-300mm VR zoom lense...I love zoom lenses :toofunny:

Picking it up when I get back. I'll go shove something in the South American section now.

I'll compare both Nikon cameras at the camera shop and see which will suit me best for what I want to do and financially. Unfortunately money always has to come in at some point.:swearing:

Peter, how is the shutter lag on this? That's the issue with getting flight shots, by the time you click the shutter, the bird is gone. You won't beleve how many shots I have of a bird's tail because I just missed. :pullhair:

I know what you mean...I have had much better luck getting flight pics with my Nikon...I never really had much success getting flight pics with my P&S cameras...I have gotten a few, but I think for that type of picture you are much better off with a DSLR...and they are becoming much more reasonably priced these days. I never relized just how much faster they are until I started using one...and if I ever learn how to "really" use it I expect to be able to get much better pictures.

I got this pic with my Nikon...I never would have gotten it with my Canon S5 IS...

What I'd like to see is a comparison of the exact same subject (so I know you can't do a flight shot for this), maybe a duck shot with both cameras. Or try a flight shot at least in the same place with the same light-take a friend? I really want to see the difference.

if I don't have my S3 in sport mode, getting an in focus flight pic takes a lot of shooting.

Do you guys have a blundered flight shot from your Canon? I was looking at that camera and I really liked it. It was fast to take the photo, I think it was .1 , I think that's what it said. I ended up getting the Kodak Easy share Z812 IS but in the two days I've had it it has locked up on me twice! That never happened with my crappy Samsung so I think Kodak is going back and I'm going to bite the bullet and get the canon. But the Kodak was fast too not as fast as Canon but it was .23 capture which is much faster than the crappy samsung.

Is there anything you don't like about your Canon S5? It has a burst mode or consecutive shot feature?

After playing with the Nikon D60 and then a Sony a200 I've decided to go with the Sony. It's been years since I had an SLR and the Sony is alot more idiot proof for someone like myself just starting off.

This is the Sony page with the info.
http://www.sony.net/Products/dslr/a200/features.html

Will hopefully go get it in a couple of weeks. Also getting the extra lens kit thingy, a couple of UV filters for protection of the lenses, bag and 2GB memory stick.

It looks really nice, can't wait to see what kind of picws you come up with.

One other issue I need to look at with my next camera is the format for the videos. I will never get one that opens in Quick Time again, it makes it impossible to use Windows Movie maker to do slide shows that combine jpegs and video.

Ahhh...but you see Katie...it's already been demo'd...you just didn't realize it  The last set of pics in the last Park Pics thread were taken with the D60...but ok...here's one from it...and don't be surprised if they don't look a whole lot different from the D40 pics...it's the lenses that REALLY make the difference...unfortunately I'm not in the same tax bracket as some, so I can't afford the more expensive ones  so I'll just make do with what I have

Oh, no worries -- I'm only kidding ;) That's great that you were able to trade up! Hmmm... I wonder if my local camera shop does that? I was going to buy the D40 last year but they wanted nearly $300 more than BestBuy, etc. I'm all for going w/ the Mom & Pop shop but I have to take my finances into consideration. If they'll accept trade-ins as credit towards a new camera, I'd just as soon buy the D60 from them this year and move on from there!
