View Full Version : Danny's hurt foot

We noticed yesterday that Danny has been acting a little strange with his foot. For the most part he is acting normal, he can perch like normal and is eating, drinking, and playing. But sometimes when he climbs or walks he only use one foot and his beak to get around. The other foot he picks up and it trembles a bit. Has anyone had this happen? He has a vet appointment tomorrow at 3pm to get it checked out.

Hmmm. I don't know. Is his foot swollen at all? Lulu had a swollen foot at one time (that the vet determined was most likely due to her cement perch) and she wouldn't perch on it and it wouldn't close/grasp all the way, but that's the extent of foot issues that I've dealt with.
Make sure his highest perch is a comfy perch, like a rope perch.
Hope everything is ok, let us know what the vet says.

His foot looks okay, no swelling or cuts or anything. But he seems to have a hard time opening it up, he is keeping it balled up when he walks. And he drags his foot over the top of his perch to open it up. The only thing I can think of are his nails are really long and that could be bothering him.

Do you think one of the other birds could have bit his foot? That hapenned to Maui last year, he needed vet care and meds but he is fine now. It doesn't sound infected because you said no cuts or swelling but good idea to have it looked out. Maui's was really swollen and without proper care he would have lost a toe. That toe is a bit crooked now but it healed up nicely!

No he never gets near the other birds. His feet aren't too good anyways, too much time without perches. I just hope he is okay.

look around his cage...is there anything where danny could've caught his foot in? maybe his foot was stuck for a while and he got it free somehow before you saw it. you said his nails were a little long..this might have attributed to it.
my conure's foot was stuck in somewhere and i think it was because it was an old cage and the bottom grate was a stubborn thing to close correctly and he got caught in that (needless to say, the cage was thrown out and we got a new one. :-/ ). he had a hard time opening and closing his toes. he needed a little brace under his foot for a little while and now its back to normal. there was no swelling, no signs of trauma, just that he wouldn't open his foot.
poor danny! keep us posted!

I'll look around when I get home tonight. We trimmed his nails a little yesterday but I want the vet to do it tomorrow, they are long and we were a little afraid to cut it, didn't want to cut it too much.

Good thing you're off to the Vets. Could he have fallen? Does he have trouble moving the whole leg? ~ sounds like it might be a nerve thing - maybe high up in the hip area? Can you handle him well?
Hope it is just a temporary injury.

He moves his leg fine, just the foot and toes. We held him and examined his foot and he didn't act like it hurt him. I've been thinking it might be a nerve thing, it makes me scared...
He could have fallen, but he has never fallen before. We were home all day Saturday and Sunday, and we didn't notice it until about 2pm yesterday afternoon.

Tiffany - how did the vet's visit go? did they find anything about Danny's foot?

Danny went to the vet today. He said he had a sprain and that his ankle was swollen. So they put a ball of gauze under his foot and let him grasp it and taped it up, so that as it healed his tendons will be okay and so that he will be able to still open his foot after it heals. He wouldn't quit messing with it, so he has a collar around his neck too. He has to go back on Thursday and possibly Saturday too to get it checked. Poor guy!

I'm happy to hear he's OK - well kind of OK - hope the treatment works & doesn't drive him nuts.
 He must be wondering how come he has to wear a collar
& what he did to deserve this brutal treatment & all the visits to the Vet! :swearing:

sounds like what my green cheek went through. but we didnt put a collar. we put something called "bitter bitter" on it - it is supposed to taste fairly disgusting (and it is..i got some accidentally in my mouth - its like putting a hot pepper or something that irritating) and stop him from biting on the gauze/tape, but he kept at it anyway. eventually he stopped and hobbled around in his foot "cast" lol.
im sure danny will be his old self soon enough!

Thanks everyone! I am really relieved it isn't something serious. Poor guy, I feel bad for him, I know he has to be stressed out. And I feel bad that I didn't know his ankle was swollen, we were so focused on his foot. But he should be fine, a little irratated but fine.

It really is heartbreaking. We feel so awful. We don't know how he hurt it but maybe it was something we did. Evan is very upset and Danny is just so frustrated that he can't climb around or really get out of his cage. I hope it heals quickly and he can take it off soon.

does he r-e-a-l-l-y have to wear that thing all day? i hate those things and i think it could do more harm than good. danny is almost going crazy with that thing on him. :(
ask your vet about "bitter bitter" you just rub it on the tape around his foot and it discourages your bird from bitting on it. (it didn't do too much to hinder our gcc, but it might work) you just have to keep an eye on the tape and reapply the tape (and that stuff) on his foot.

I don't know how long he has to wear it, he goes for a check-up tomorrow. I'll get Evan to ask about the bitter butter then, I would love for him not to have to wear it. He was plucking out feathers around it trying to get it off. He has calmed down alot since yesterday, he has been eating and playing with his favorite toy. Evan has to give him medicine 2x a day and he got a shot yesterday. But it is heartbreaking. Him and Evan are having a VERY hard time with it. He is just so frustrated because he can't really get out of his cage and Evan works 9-9 today so I am sure he will not be a happy camper when he sees that just I am coming home tonight.

Ask your AV about Metacam. I think this is an antiinflammatory which also has an analgesic effect. Maui never picked at his wound and it has to be because of the meds. I put fresh Aloe Vera on it too, we have plants in the back yard.

More than anyone knows! Those two are hilarious! Danny hates me, I mean he really hates me! He lunges at me if I even walk past his cage, tries to bite me when I fill up his food, and runs from me alot. But he happily steps up for Evan, lets him kiss him and rub his head and cuddle with him. He is definitley Evan's bird! And Danny lets everyone know that Evan is his!

Evan just got finished at the vet with Danny. He asked about the bitter butter and the vet said he would rather him keep wearing the collar. So it is still on and his foot was rewrapped (is that a word? lol). He goes back on Tuesday for another checkup. Does anyone know how long this should take to heal? I just don't want him wearing that collar for weeks.

Maui had an open wound that healed in a week. Not sure about a sprain, the bones may need more time to strengthen. Poor baby, I'm sorry he couldn't ditch the collar.

Are you sure that Danny isn't Danielle? How is everyone accepting Scarlett?

its pretty normal for them to act like that with a collar. I have seen it several times. There is another collar out there that is not a big cone. Its something like Boca collars or Acrylic collars made by a company in Boca Raton florida.
See if your vet can research them.
He should calm down shortly. tho, I cant say I have seen a foot wrapped like that.

No he hasn't been DNAed that we know of. But Evan and I have thought all along that he might actually be a she. Doyle is very interetsed in her, I think they may become friends.
Lisa- Yeah his foot looks goofy, but it is just so his foot stays open. Evan said it was something about so his tendons stay stretched as it heals.
