Someone asked me recently ... how/ why did you create a room just for your birds.... so I typed this out earlier on a doc.... and thought I would share with you... of how my birdroom came to be....
My Old Man does not (did not) care for birds ... would NOT let me get one for yeeeears... and then Tweety needed a home... or was about to be set free ... outside.... so home Tweety came....
I really did not have a spare room for the birdroom... it WAS my sewing/craft room.... and a "spare" bedroom with a day/trundle bed in it.... mostly used for my get away form the world room, with a LARGE "DO NOT DISTURB" sign on it...
After I got Tweety.. and had him for about a month.... I realized that my lungs did NOT care for the tiel dust.... went and got a hepa air purifier and that helped quite a bit.... but decided to try and contain the tiel dust to just one room...
In the mean time .. was daily on computer.. researching about tiel care and diet... and have not slowed down that much on info search since...
Tweety got moved to the sewing room with the hepa air filter.... and went and got 8 large clear plastic storage containers/bins... began to box up craft supplies and fabric, labeling the contents of each box..
Bought a colapsable buffet table (2 1/2 ft x 6 ft) to put Tweety's cage on ... and then talked Old Man into building the first flight cage..... tacked shower curtains on wall near cage.. to make for easier clean up of flung food and "stuff" from walls near cage......
The rest is history... more bird stuff.... tabletop play gymn... he build a hanging playgymn... got another tiel (Freyja)....and gave away the day bed that was in there to make room for another table and flight cage .... added shelving to put bird supplies on/in...... toys and toy making stuff in yet more smaller bins..small shop vac under a table to help with birdy clean up (Xmas present this year LOL)...reg tiel size cage under a table that I use for vet transport or to move tiels for a short time (about an hour) to other end of house when doing major room cleaning and vacuming/rearranging once a week...
The sewing machine is still in a corner (now covered except when in use).. with the bins of sewing and craft stuff (made covers for them) that I rarely have time for now.. some of the bins are even stored under bird tables with the crates of newspapers for cages.... the old chair is still in there.. and I spent time with birds sitting in it....... bird safe plants have been added and are rotated in and out on a reg basis... even have a planter box of rye and wheat grass for them to nibble on.... and pots of basil and nastursium that are devowered by them ( I have to replant on a reg basis and keep rotating)...
Still have room .. for more cages.... and yet another table if need be... just some of the larger plants would need to be relocated....
This is the story of how the birdroom came to be....
