The Rare and Beautiful Ultramarine Lory
These little guys are gorgeous but hard to see as they are only in remote islands of French Polynesia.
Ultramarine Lory Status in the Wild World Population: 1000-2499 Range: Restricted to Marquesas Islands of Nuku Hiva, Ua Pu and Ua Huka; fossil remains show that this species formerly ranged more widely. Habitat: Found above 700m (2296 ft), montane forest. Also has been seen in banana, coconut and mango plantations in coastal areas. Threat Summary: Introduced rats, cats; possibly habitat degradation from agriculture (grazing cattle) and avian malaria; also fire. IUCN Rating: Endangered Wild Diet: Eats fruit, insects, pollen and nectar; feeds in flowering trees. CITES Rating: Appendix I Ecology: Noisy and conspicuous in spite of low numbers, may allow close approach. Stays at or near top of forest canopy. Clutch and Egg Size: 2 rounded eggs, 22.5 x 18.5mm (0.9 x 0.7 in)
